Homework Policy
A good, well-managed homework programme helps children to develop the skills and attitudes they will need for successful lifelong learning. Homework also supports the development of independent learning skills and provides parents with an opportunity to take part in their children's education.
Homework tasks vary but may include: learning a unit of work, completing a written exercise, making a model, finishing classwork, planning, research or preparation for a project or presentation. Not all homework will generate a recorded mark. The aim of the homework timetable is to avoid a pupil having too much homework on any one night. It will not always be appropriate for a subject tutor to set homework on every occasion.
A subject-by-subject outline of homework tasks has been produced for Year 7. This was trialled in 2007/8 with a view to extending it throughout KS3. Homework load at KS4 will vary depending on examination and coursework deadlines. Students in senior school are expected to work more independently with regard to homework and the need to consolidate learning between lessons.
A successful homework programme requires teachers, pupils and parents to work in partnership. The responsibilities of each of these groups are described in the table, which can be seen here.
